" a picture says a thousand words"
Public relations is all about crating a good image to the public while advertising is drawing public attention about a particular product with the main of persuading them to have it.
from the corporate world as i learned during during my internship period at PDQ Public relations is rated three times larger than advertising mainly because public relations gives a detailed information about the product therefore it is much effective than advertising.
don't get me wrong advertising is still powerful for its eye catching or what we can call love at first site" but when one consumer is looking at a print advert a bout a car and the other is reading an article about the same car, the person who is reading gets fed with a lot of information more the one who gets fascinated by an advert.
As a PR professional, your job is to get free publicity therefore you are responsible for getting the company's name out there with no fascinating headline , simply news while on the other hand in advertising you control what goes in the advertisement which gives public relations an edge over advertising.
finally i would say advertising has a longer lifespan than public relations mainly because you pay for the advert to appear as many times as possible while public relations you cannot have a say on how, where and when a press release will appear and last in newspaper.
